Buy Print Picture this, emancipation day in Brixton hosts thousands of the global majority who gather to celebrate freedom. Meanwhile, in a minor road off the main parade site, two creatives, overencumbered with a couple C-stands and a 4 by 4 m colourama, sewn from ankara fabrics, slowly but surely lug their apparently portable kit in search of the event’s keynote speaker. Guarded at all times, there is a queue to speak with reparationist, Esther Stanford Xosei. Clutching her phone, she whispers a quck voice note, touting mantras of black liberation.
The cover image above sets the tone for the wider series, which hosts pan-Afrikan activists from the UK. The team were able to align intention with creation, capturing Athain Akec, Edward Adonteng, and Marvina Newton in addition to Esther Stanford Xosei. This work was about fostering connections between community as much as it was about creating a space for image-creation. Before the photoshoot, participants were interviewed to hear their political standing, where images were guided by the conversation. We produced a zine which hosted collabortive writers from Tribe Named Athari and Athian Akec.
